Couple Therapy Workshop for Professionals

Date: TBD

9:00am – 12:00pm

Lakewood Tower Conference Room

6301 Gaston Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75214

(Lower level parking)

Workshop Description:

Couple therapists strive to make their therapy more effective. Working with couples is more difficult than working with individuals. Methods of couple therapy have evolved as limited-term treatments. And yet, books published by creators of competing couple therapies are getting longer (250 to nearly 500 pages) and their training workshops more detailed and lengthier.

We are offering a counter-trend approach: a 117-page training book and one three-hour training workshop. You can order our couple and family training guide book upon request at jmlewisfoundation@att.net or call us at 214-388-0451. You may obtain the book without signing up for the workshop, but if you plan to attend the workshop, you need to order the book first since the workshop contents assume that you have read the book.

The book contains the Lewis Scales which will allow you to quickly identify new client couples’ levels of distress across 10 evidence-based dimensions, identify problem areas to be explored, and assess strengths with which to address those problems. These measures also may be used to track treatment progress and outcomes.

The Lewis Scales are compatible with all the widely used couple therapy systems, or they may be used as a stand-alone structure for couple evaluation and treatment planning.

Workshop attendees will be provided hand-outs describing the origins of our materials, print copies of all power point slides, and a concise paper that may be given to clients that helps couple partners know when they might benefit from couple therapy and when they might not. This paper is available for download here: “Couple Self-Improvement? Couple Counseling? Neither? Both? A Guide Through the Choices.”

Learning Objectives:

1) Attendees will be informed of the crucial role of relationship conflict resolution styles for long-term relationship quality outcomes.

2) Attendees will learn the theoretical and empirical foundations of the new Lewis Couple and Family Evaluation Scales (Lewis Scales).

3) Attendees will have hands-on experience using the Lewis Scales to evaluate four couple interaction video recordings of actual living-together romantic couples engaged in attempts at relationship problem-solving discussions.

4) Attendees will achieve increased levels of competence and confidence in using the Lewis Scales in both clinical and self-improvement activities.

Presenters Qualifications:

Registration Fee: $50.00 for Professionals and Free for students

Registrants will receive the Lewis Scales Packet which includes the Lewis Foundation Couple and Family Evaluation Scales booklet, the Rater Training Guide, and Scoring Summary forms. Attendees are asked to read these materials carefully before the workshop in order to provide attendees with a representative set of couple interaction videos and be able to explore those ratings in enough detail.

If you are looking for a workshop where you sit and listen to three hours of lectures, that is not this one. But if you’d like to join one where the introductory presentation is brief, followed by a few hours of highly enjoyable learning and practicing a new set of observational skills that have every-day practical applications in both clinical and research settings, as well as in your own romantic couple relationship, that is this one.

Additional information: Registration begins at 8:30am. The workshop begins promptly at 9:00am.

To register call 214-388-0451 or email inquiries to jmlewisfoundation@att.net.
